Wickedly Detailed Costumes in ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’


The spellbinding costumes in the Disney film, “Oz the Great and Powerful” brought the vivid film to life. Costume designer, Gary Jones and Michael Kutsche, clothed over 1500 actors over a 23 week period. The actors Oz, Theodora, Glinda and Evanora had over 200 pieces of costumes and accessories in the film.


James Franco (Oz) had only one costume in the film. He wore a 3-piece suit was designed based off of the 1880-1930 era. Gary Jones researched vintage photos from the era that inspired the final black cutaway suit worn in the film.



“For Evanora, the ruler of Emerald City, the starting point was looking at the architecture of the city,” Kutsche says. “I really wanted her to not just be some person in this place, but to actually be this place.”

Kutsche sculpted the characters in two-dimensional sketches before Jones began the process of bringing the characters costumes to life.


Michelle Williams character (Glinda) costume changed as she went into battle. “Like fairy-princess armor” says Williams.


Theodora had three costume changes in the film. Mila Kunis (Theodora) said, “The character goes through transformations with her costumes.”

The costume’s from the film, “Oz the Great and Powerful” are currently on display at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Visitors to the theatre have a unique opportunity to view the detail of the costumes until April 30th.
