Yaquina Head Lighthouse

One afternoon while staying at the Salishan Resort along the beautiful Oregon coast, we went to explore the popular Yaquina Head Lighthouse. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Salishan Resort and then took the scenic drive along the coast to see the lighthouse.

When we first arrived at the Yaquina Head Nature Area, we paid a small fee to enter the nature preserve. We drove around the bend to discover a beautiful lighthouse at the edge of the cliff. It was extremely windy the day that we visited so we didn’t walk all the way to the lighthouse but did take the stairs down to explore the black sand beach.

At the bottom of the stairs were some volunteers who talked to my children about the different wildlife they might come across while looking the tide pools and reminded them to respect the area, and not take any rocks or shells home with them.

The black sand beach is more like a black rock beach, so I recommend wearing sturdy shoes when exploring with your children. I sat on the beach watching the waves crash against the rocks with the beautiful lighthouse in the background. While I was soaking in the beauty of the area, my teenagers ran off to explore the beach together.

I highly recommend planning a visit to the Yaquina Head Lighthouse while staying at the Salishan Resort. You can make it a quick visit or spend half a day exploring the area. There is plenty of parking available and nice clean restrooms. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is located in the Yaquina Head Nature Preserve at 750 NW Lighthouse Dr, Newport, Oregon. The entrance fee is $7 for a 3-day pass.
